Clover Flex Terminal Guide
The CardPointe Integrated Terminal solution includes Clover Flex devices for U.S. merchants. The Clover Flex provides a secure and modern payment experience while allowing businesses to accept payments from virtually anywhere.
The Clover Flex supports:
- Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity
- EMV/chip card payments
- Magnetic stripe/swipe payments
- NFC/contactless payments
- Manually entered card payments
- Built-in receipt printing on supported models
The device also uses point-to-point encryption to help reduce PCI compliance scope. Encrypted payment data is transmitted securely using HTTPS over TLS 1.2.
Clover Flex devices can also be added to existing integrations. Additional integration information is available in the CardPointe Integrated Terminal Developer Guide for Clover Terminals.
What’s New?Clover Flex 4 and Flex PocketThe Clover Flex 4 and Flex Pocket are available for CardPointe Integrated Terminal merchants.
Flex 4The Flex 4 includes all of the same functionality as the Flex 3, along with an upgraded 5.99" high-resolution 720x1440 display.

Note: If custom wallpapers are currently being used, image sizes may need to be updated to 720×1440 to display correctly on the updated screen resolution.
Flex PocketThe Flex Pocket is a lighter and more portable version of the Clover Flex designed for added convenience and mobility.
The device delivers the same core Flex functionality in a smaller and lighter design that can easily fit into a pocket.

- Accepts manually entered card payments

Note: The Flex Pocket does not include a built-in receipt printer.
If you currently use a Clover Flex with custom wallpaper or logo images, you may need to update those images to properly fit the higher-resolution 720x1440 display used on the Flex 4 and Flex Pocket.

Setting Up Your DeviceBefore beginning setup, locate your CoPilot equipment order email titled:
“Your CardPointe Terminal Order Has Shipped!”
You will need the Registration Code or Order ID included in the email to register the device.
Network RequirementsThe Clover Flex connects using:
- Wi-Fi
- LTE/mobile network
If using Wi-Fi, the following network recommendations are suggested:
- The device must have a direct internet connection and does not support TLS proxy configurations
- Configure a DHCP IP address range for terminal devices using a dedicated subnet when possible
- Static IP addresses may also be reserved for terminal devices
- Use a WPA-secured Wi-Fi network with password protection
- For additional security, access can optionally be restricted by MAC address, IP address, services, or ports
If needed, your network administrator or IT provider can assist with advanced network setup.
Getting StartedTo begin using your Clover Flex device:
- Set up the Clover Flex
- Register the Clover Flex
- Launch the CardPointe application
- Switch to Customer Mode to begin accepting payments
Using the CardPointe Integrated Terminal Application
The CardPointe Integrated Terminal App is automatically installed during device setup and activation.
The application includes two operating modes:
Merchant ModeMerchant Mode is the merchant-facing interface.
In Merchant Mode, you can:
- Access the CardPointe Admin Panel
- Manage CardPointe application settings
- Manage terminal settings
- Access Android device settings
Customer Mode
Customer Mode is the customer-facing interface used during normal payment processing.
In Customer Mode, merchants and customers can complete payment transactions directly on the device.
Launching the CardPointe AppFrom the CardPointe App Launcher, tap the CardPointe icon to open the application and begin accepting payments.
You can also open the Settings application to modify Android device settings if needed.
The CardPointe App initially launches in Merchant Mode and displays the Welcome screen.
If the Clover Flex is successfully connected to the CardPointe service and ready to process payments, the device status displays:
Connected
If the status displays:
Disconnected
the device is unable to communicate with the CardPointe Integrated Terminal service.
If this occurs, access the CardPointe Admin Panel to troubleshoot the network connection.
To begin accepting payments:
- Tap the Customer Mode button
To access settings and troubleshooting tools:
- Tap the Admin Panel button
Accepting Payments
To process payments successfully:
- The CardPointe application must display Connected
- The Clover Flex must be in Customer Mode
Once the application is in Customer Mode, your POS software communicates with the device using the CardPointe Terminal API.
Important: The device cannot communicate with your POS software while Merchant Mode is enabled.
It is strongly recommended that the device remain in Customer Mode during normal daily operation.
You can also enable the Lock Customer Mode option to automatically launch the CardPointe App in Customer Mode.
Using Merchant ModeThe CardPointe App initially launches in Merchant Mode.
Merchant Mode provides access to the CardPointe Admin Panel, which is used to configure and troubleshoot the CardPointe application.
Switching to Merchant ModeTo switch from Customer Mode to Merchant Mode:
- Tap all four corners of the touchscreen simultaneously
Once in Merchant Mode, you can access the CardPointe Admin Panel.

Device Registration Issues
If you experience issues while registering the Clover Flex device, first confirm that the terminal is connected to the internet. For additional troubleshooting steps, refer to the Network Connectivity Issues section.
If you receive one of the following error messages during registration, follow the steps below to resolve the issue.
“Order not valid for terminal”This message usually indicates that the registration code entered during setup is incorrect.
To resolve the issue:
- Verify that the registration code was entered correctly
- Refer to your Welcome Email to confirm the correct registration code
- If you no longer have access to the Welcome Email, contact CardPointe Support for assistance recovering the registration code
This message may appear if the device was previously registered and later reset to factory settings. In this situation, the terminal must be reinitialized before it can be registered again.
To reinitialize the device:
- On the Registration Failed screen, tap Retry to return to the Terminal Registration screen
- On the Terminal Registration screen, tap the Go to Reinit message located at the bottom of the screen
- Contact CardPointe Support to obtain a reinitialization key
- Enter the reinitialization key on the Terminal Reinitialization screen
Once reinitialization is complete, continue with the registration process.
Other Registration ErrorsIf you receive any other registration error messages, contact CardPointe Support for additional assistance.
Network Connectivity Issues
If the Clover Flex device is experiencing network connection issues, use the steps below to troubleshoot the connection.
- If the CardPointe App is currently in Customer Mode, press all four corners of the touch screen to switch to Merchant Mode.
- In Merchant Mode, tap the Admin Panel button from the Welcome screen.
- On the Admin Panel, tap Internet Connection to view the current network status and connection details.
- To update or reconfigure the network settings, tap Advanced Configuration to open the Android device network settings.
From the network settings menu, you can reconnect to Wi-Fi, update connection settings, or troubleshoot network-related issues.
Locking Customer Mode
When Customer Mode Lock is enabled, the CardPointe App automatically launches in Customer Mode each time the device starts.
It is recommended that Customer Mode Lock remain enabled to help ensure the Clover Flex stays connected to your POS application and ready to process payments during normal business operations.
To enable or disable Customer Mode Lock:
- If the CardPointe App is currently in Customer Mode, press all four corners of the touch screen to switch to Merchant Mode.
- In Merchant Mode, tap the Admin Panel button from the Welcome screen.
- On the Admin Panel, locate the Lock Customer Mode setting.
- Tap the toggle to enable or disable Customer Mode Lock.
Switching User Modes
The CardPointe App includes two operating modes:
- Customer Mode
- Merchant Mode
You can switch between these modes at any time using the steps below.
Switch from Customer Mode to Merchant ModeTo access Merchant Mode, tap all four corners of the touch screen simultaneously.
Switch from Merchant Mode to Customer ModeTo return to Customer Mode, tap the Customer Mode button on the Welcome screen.
Reinitializing Your Clover Mini After a Factory Reset
After performing a factory reset on your Clover Mini, the device will need to be reinitialized before you can access the CardPointe app.
Please follow the steps below:
- On the Terminal Registration screen, tap Go to Reinit located at the bottom of the screen.
- Contact CardPointe Support to request a reinitialization key.
- Once you receive the key, enter it on the Terminal Reinitialization screen.
After the key is entered successfully, your device will complete the reinitialization process and be ready to use.
